Congratulations are in order for Souyma Kattikat and Steve Ferndandez!

If you stopped by the Wilson’s pool on a Tuesday night these past few months, you may have seen them swimming side by side—laughter echoing through the glass atrium.

It didn’t start off like that, says Souyma: “I was quite anxious at the start, as I was uncomfortable in the water and couldn’t even put my head under. Kat’s calm, patient, and encouraging teaching style made a huge difference. Swimming with her felt relaxing, and she gradually helped me overcome my fears—to the point where I was confidently dolphin diving for pool toys! By the end of the program, I had learned three strokes.”

Coach Kat beams, saying that “the sense of ease, confidence, and play” she sees when Souyma and Steve swim together today is exactly what she hopes swimmers gain from the adult learn-to-swim (ALTS) program. This story comes at the perfect time, as April is Adult Learn-to-Swim Month.

According to United States Masters Swimming (USMS), approximately 37% of adults in the U.S. are not yet able to swim the length of a pool. Further, only about half of adults can perform all five basic lifesaving water skills: jumping in, treading water, turning, swimming 25 yards, and exiting. The ALTS program is working to expand access to lifesaving skills and a love of swimming nationwide.

Souyma started working with Coach Kat on her own, and, after several sessions, her husband, Steve joined for tag-team lessons. “My husband also made great progress,” Souyma says. “He finished with two strokes under his belt and felt great about his improved skills.”

Souyma and Steve looked forward to the weekly lessons. “What really stood out to both of us,” she says, “was how thoughtfully Kat tailored each session to our individual needs and goals. She balanced encouragement with skill-building in a way that kept us both motivated and comfortable.”

“Tag-team lessons are so much fun,” says Coach Kat. “Learning is great—and learning with a friend or spouse, well, that’s even better. I told Souyma and Steve that now they’re ready to race their kids all over the pool this summer.”

At their final lesson, Souyma and Steve showcased the many skills they had learned, and Coach Kat even introduced flip turns. After practice, she presented them with certificates of accomplishment, which the two accepted proudly, laughing at the “surprise graduation.”

“We highly recommend Kat to anyone—especially adults who may feel nervous about learning to swim,” says Souyma. “Her approach truly transforms the experience.”

How can you get started with Coach Kat at Wilson’s? Send her an e-mail and get your session scheduled! kathrynfweaver@gmail.com

An accomplished swimmer himself, Coach Mike was an Olympic Trials qualifier, a USA All-American, and is a USMS All-American.

He met Coach Kat a little over a year ago when she was launching our Adult Learn-to-Swim program. She said his visit to Wilson’s was “a kind of full circle moment” for her as a swim coach. “Coach Mike is such a positive influence on swimming,” says Kat. “It’s impossible to be around him and not improve, both as a coach and a swimmer.”

During Coach Mike’s visit, he toured our facilities, led a stroke clinic, joined us for an adult learn-to-swim community event, and celebrated Coach Kat’s recent designation as a Level 3 USMS Coach.

Mike shared that he was impressed with everything happening at Wilson’s. “The facility is first rate, top-of-the-line, and offers clients an extensive number of options that makes this health club a quality facility” He adds that “The people were just great—so kind and welcoming. Instructing from the pool deck was super comfortable, and the swimmers were all so coachable.”

In planning the visit, Kat said she couldn’t wait for Coach Mike “to meet the incredible swimmers who practice at Wilson’s.” This includes swimmers like Ellie Trick, who has been a regular at Coach Kat’s group practice since the beginning of the swim program.

Ellie joined the stroke clinic to further refine her technique. “Coach Mike was fun and made class a good time,” she said, adding that he taught her new skills, especially around breathing. “It turns out,” says Ellie, “that for me, swimming is a lot more thinking and not as much splashing in the water to get to the finish line.”

Kelsey Fishman, another regular swimmer in the practice group, said, “Coach Mike made everyone feel great about their progress.” This is the goal of both USMS coaching and the inclusive adult swim program we’ve built at Wilson’s. Coach Mike says these clinics were “all about making small technique adjustments that have a big impact in the pool.”

For Tabitha Kimble, one of the adult learn-to-swim students from 2025, she came to the clinic hoping to make progress on her freestyle kick. At the end of the clinic, she had not only made progress—she was demonstrating her progress to the whole class.

Swimmers had many reasons for joining the clinics. A few triathletes came looking to improve their efficiency. One long-time distance swimmer said she had heard about all the fun happening in Coach Kat’s group practice and hoped this might be the first step in helping her fall back in love with the sport.

The swim events were all marked by personal goals, small technique adjustments, and a lot of laughing. As such, there was no competition—only progress, persistence, and community. Yet both coaches agree that if they had awarded a most-inspiring-clinic-swimmer, that recognition would have gone to Betty Mwai.

Her passion for teaching radiates through every lesson, and her unwavering belief in me gave me the strength to keep going, even when I doubted myself.”

“Small forward steps, or in the ALTS program, small strokes forward make all the difference.” says Kathryn, “Every time we were in the pool, we made progress. Jenniffer is a fast learner and a great athlete.” The two met once to twice a week and worked their way through the ALTS curriculum. “Once Jenniffer mastered swimming 25 yards freestyle continuously and confidently, there was no looking back.” says Kathryn, “After that, she was truly a swimmer.”

This is the same concept as asking a client/student to jump or lift weights before developing inner core strength. Somatic awareness of the inner core unit must accompany all activities in life to keep a body balanced and healthy. Weak, tight, or unbalanced core muscles can inhibit or create pain in any activity we might do in life. In all areas of life, stand tall and stay rooted.

The inner core unit refers to the functional synergy between the deep muscles of the core. The inner core unit is composed of the transversus abdominis, the posterior fibers of the obliquus internus abdominis, the diaphragm, the pelvic floor muscles, the multifidus and lumbar portions of the longissimus and Iliocostalis and psoas. These muscles have their origin or insertion at the vertebrae and generate little or no movement during activation. Contraction of these deep core muscles provides segmental stabilization of the spine. The inner core unit is activated a few seconds before the movement of the limbs. The impaired function of the inner core unit affects stability in the limbs and vertebral column.

How do you fix it? By bringing awareness and understanding to this crucial set of muscles, we set ourselves up for greater stability and mobility in our daily endeavors and fitness classes!!

Good Good Vibrations
With summer just around the corner we might all be singing that famous tune by the Beach Boys and feeling that summer high. Music, sun and being outdoors are some of the best ways to bring those feelings of good vibrations. Another way to connect to these feelings is through awareness of the T (thought) field.

All things in our universe are constantly in motion, vibrating. Even objects that appear to be stationary are in fact vibrating, oscillating, resonating, at various frequencies. Resonance is a type of motion, characterized by oscillation between two states. And ultimately all matter is just vibrations of various underlying fields. L-fields (discussed in previous Wilson’s blogspot) are subtle physical fields that are measured electrically and T-fields are thought fields. Through awareness of our thoughts, along with Swadhyaya (self study), we can begin to change and/or increase our overall vibration, which leads to a great sense of well being.

Extend your legs out in front of you and place anything under the hips you may need to bring your hips to neutral. You could also place a block or pillow under the knees if the hamstrings are tight. Breathing in, lift through the spine and begin to hinge from the hips, exhaling softening the body down with gravity. Do this a few times and observe the sensations in your back body as you breathe in this position.
