Betty Bohon

Betty Bohon

Betty is certified through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) in Group Fitness, Les Mills in RPM and BodyVive, and has trained for BOSU and TRX. A fixture at Wilson’s Fitness since 1996, her teaching career began in the early 80’s. She’s taught multiple formats, including step, ‘slide’ and group racquetball and currently teaches RPM and BOSU along with Hot Barre in the hot studio.

Though Betty was athletic as a child, her real start with fitness began when she was 29. After having her first child she began jogging to lose weight. Then she started running races. Then marathons, including the infamous Boston Marathon. She  also played competitive women’s racquetball, biked the MS 150 and took aerobics classes. Betty chose to become an instructor when coaxed by an instructor to channel her passion for working out. “I love sharing the knowledge I have acquired along the way and watching people see that fitness is fun; it gives you energy and makes you feel great!” She wants her members to get excited about living a healthy lifestyle and be good examples for their families and friends, too.

What Betty loves most is motivating people to believe they have an inner athlete, that they can become fitter, and it is never too late! Since she was almost 30 when she began, she inspires her participants simply by walking the walk. “If I can inspire just one person to get healthier each time I lead a class, then I am fulfilled. I have done the job that I love so much.”

Darla Tharp

Darla Tharp

Darla Tharp is certified in Les Mills BodyAttack and has been teaching at Wilson’s since January 2017. She developed a love of fitness, sports, and the outdoors at an early age.  In middle and high school, Darla participated in softball and basketball, ran as a sprinter on the track team, and took dance classes for fun.  In college, she continued to play softball and had a regular fitness routine that included running and resistance training.  After college her focus shifted to half marathons and triathlons. “I really enjoy mixing up my routine and trying different types of physical challenges which brought me to Wilson’s group fitness.  Attending classes in addition to running, biking, and swimming is a great way to increase strength, stamina, agility, and flexibility.”

Because four of Darla’s passions are physical fitness, music, teaching, and socializing, becoming a group fitness instructor was a natural fit. She loves helping others to reach their fitness goals and maintain a healthy balanced lifestyle. “I feel blessed to be able to teach classes to the beat of funky music while being immersed in the energy of the wonderful people around me.  It is a great way to challenge my own fitness capacity as well as those who attend class.”

Professionally, the love of science fostered by curiosity and a desire to explore the world lead Darla, at the age of 18, to a skeletal muscle physiology lab where she discovered that she wanted to do scientific research for the rest of her life.  After obtaining her Ph.D. in 2007, she began her career of research and teaching at the University of Missouri in the areas of cardiovascular health and disease, exercise physiology, and molecular biology. Performing research has further enhanced her intrigue with fitness because it continuously reiterates the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. “Physical fitness improves not only our physical health, but also our mental health. And it acts like a ‘magic pill’ against many diseases.”

Whenever she’s not working in the lab or teaching, Darla loves to spend time with her friends and family exploring the outdoors. She’s frequently found biking on the Katy Trail or running at Rock Bridge State Park. “Being physically active with others in the beauty and wonder of nature is like seeing a tiny glimpse of God’s love.”

She has completed YogaFIT Levels 1, 2 and 3, and is also certified by the American Council on Exercise in personal training. She began her fitness journey after the birth of her second child, taking aerobics classes at a local college. For 20 years she could be found on the front row, changing her body, getting stronger, and loving the social aspect of working out; making lifelong friends in the process. She took the leap to become an instructor when she moved to Columbia with her family from Austin, Texas in 2006 starting with BodyStep. In 2007 she joined the team at Wilson’s and helped expand the group fitness program one format at a time, each an exciting new adventure. She currently teaches BodyPump, BodyCombat and BodyFlow and works as the Assistant Group Fitness Manager.

Lisa is a former vocalist and music therapist who brings her love of music and passion for fitness together to motivate her clients, inspiring them to reach their ultimate potential. “I love the electricity that happens when people aspire, together, to conquer their challenges. The moments when the whole room is working hard, when members reach heights they thought were unobtainable, those are the magic moments.” Lisa says the most rewarding thing about teaching is making a difference in people’s lives. “If people walk away from my class feeling empowered, feeling good about themselves, there is no better success.”

Emily Smith

Emily may be new to teaching at Wilson’s, but she’s a familiar face in group fitness classes. As a front row participant, she was encouraged for years by her instructors to take the next step in her own journey. A self-proclaimed ‘group exercise fanatic,’ in January 2016 she finally took the leap to become an instructor and completed her certification in Les Mills CXWorX.

“I just love exercising in classes so much. It’s fun to meet people through the gym, and the group energy is the best for competitive people, like me. I was going to the gym all the time, so I figured I’d get in on the ground floor of a new Les Mills program here at Wilson’s.” Emily says so far the best things about teaching are making jokes that no one laughs at, and members coming up and telling her how hard a class was or how sore it made them. When they add how much they loved it and that they’ll be back for more, she knows it’s all worth it.

“This 30-minute core class, CX, is a great place for new people to start because it’s short and there are a lot of options. But it’s also great if you’ve been going to the gym for a long time and want to add a short class that will improve your performance in other areas.”

Amy Appold

Amy Appold

Amy, by her own definition, is a latecomer to group fitness. She worked out for the first time in her life at age 39 after undergoing treatment for cancer, but it didn’t take long for her to become ‘addicted.’ Amy is certified in Les Mills BodyStep and BodyPump and has been teaching at Wilson’s since the fall of 2008. Becoming an instructor was the next logical goal for her once she acquired her personal fitness level as it seemed to fit her skills; Amy is a virtuoso violinist and has a vast background as a professional musician and now teaches her own violin students. Being a group fitness instructor also fit her personality. “It was a challenge, and I love a challenge.”

Amy encourages her participants to strive to reach their goals with as much detail, excellence and drive as they can. “I love it when I can help someone realize that they can do it; that they are doing it, and that they love doing it, more than they thought they would.”

As a two-time cancer survivor who began her pursuit of physical fitness later in life, she wants her members to know that it doesn’t take anything they don’t already have to become physically fit. “If I can do it, you can do it!”

Joy holds multiple certifications including Les Mills BodyPump and Body Flow, Yoga Fit Level 1, and Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) Group Fitness. She started dancing when she was six and continued through junior high. In high school, she moved on to tennis and swim team, and in college, she took many physical education classes such as bowling, dance and movement, swimming for conditioning, and beginning, intermediate and advanced racquetball. After college she missed ‘the sweat’ and vowed never to stop exercising.

She’s not sure how long she’s been at Wilson’s but knows it’s a long time because she taught through both her pregnancies, and as of 2016, her two boys are 24 and 27. Joy stays because she truly enjoys it. “I love interacting with clients, being a bit of a clown and having a good time. Fitness can be a ‘family’ activity and encouraging the class members is fun.” Joy loves the community of regular folks trying to stay active in a sedentary world. “I love changing the shapes of our bodies, calming our minds and having a good time.”

She’s been a competitive runner, a US Cycling Federation bike racer, and a triathlete. She originally pursued teaching to deepen her own practice; in her words, “teaching to learn.”

Anne particularly likes teaching at Wilson’s because the participants are involved in a variety of physical experiences and come to class physically and mentally prepared to try new things. “I really enjoy the creative challenge of meeting people on the mat and helping them progress in their yoga journey.”

Robin May

Robin is certified in KettleWorX, indoor cycling and TRX. Before becoming an instructor, Robin took spinning classes at Wilson’s in 2001 and fell in love with its intensity and cross training benefits. In high school she enjoyed competitive sports, especially basketball and volleyball. After marrying a runner in 1994, she slowly, but surely became serious about running. Starting in 2000 she has competed races of all distances including three marathons and several duathlons.

Robin has always been an athlete, but after she started her exercise routine and healthy eating as an adult, she lost 40 lbs. She wanted to help others and inspire them in ways that were personal to her. “I understand what it’s like to be self-conscious about body image and I want to help people in that struggle.”  When she became an instructor in 2007, she started with indoor cycling. And when she needed a new challenge, she found it with KettleWorX in 2014. Robin currently teaches KettleWorX and Hot Barre at Wilson’s.

“Teaching motivates me to live fitness as a lifestyle. It also challenges me both physically and mentally and I enjoy that added dimension of the workout. Plus, I really like being in charge!“ Above all, she loves her members and the friendships that have come from her classes. And she loves for new people to try her classes. Teaching gives her a chance to be a cheerleader for others in their fitness journey. “It is so exciting to see people transform their lives!” I love for new people to try my classes. I get excited to see new faces, especially at 5:30 a.m.!

Amanda Oleiro

Amanda Oleiro

Amanda knows how to bring fun to fitness, and, as a former competitive swimmer, runner and rower, she knows how to push her body to the limit. Applying that combination to her teaching makes her members work hard and love every minute of it. Amanda has been teaching at Wilson’s since 2013 with a certification in Les Mills Sh’Bam. She also teaches Hot Barre in the hot studio.

Group fitness helped Amanda appreciate all her body does for her. “I wanted to be an instructor in hopes of giving back and helping others feel the same appreciation.” The best thing she likes about teaching is ‘getting goofy and sassy’ in order to put smiles on the faces of her participants. “I love getting to know members. If you ever want to talk fitness and fun, by all means, come talk to me.”

Kimberly Uffmann

Kimberly Uffmann

Kim holds a certification with Les Mills in BodyJam, which she received in March of 2016. She began teaching for Wilson’s shortly after. “Dance has always been my form of fitness. I danced in high school, and after that, I took classes at MCB here in Columbia. When my class was cancelled, I found BodyJam.” It didn’t take long for Kim to realize she ‘needed’ to become an instructor, she just had to wait for the rest of her life to fall into place before she could make it happen. Her instructor, Kelly Lancey, was a big influence and encouraged Kim to go to training. It was in Kelly’s classes that Kim found a dance outlet where she could really let go and add her own flair. Now, as an instructor herself, Kim loves having the opportunity to encourage others just as she was encouraged. “I want them to come and sweat and get a great workout, but also to have fun, let loose, and put their own feelings into the movements.”

While Kim loves the music and the dancing, her favorite part of teaching is sharing all of it with an amazing group of people. “My Jammers are my family! We support one another both inside and outside of the gym. I can be having the worst day and when I get in that room with them I can feed off of their positive energy! I love hearing how they feel the same and that they ‘need’ their jam time, too!”

Kim is also a kindergarten teacher in Columbia and recently graduated from MU, obtaining her certificate for administration. She lives with her husband, Bryce and fur baby, Maize.

Eric Blumberg

Eric Blumberg

Eric has always worked out at the gym, but it wasn’t until 2010, when he got bored on the treadmill, that he attended classes. After a few years as a participant he was challenged by another instructor to take the next step in his fitness career and train as a coach. Eric rose to the challenge and hasn’t stopped since. He now holds three certifications through Les Mills; GRIT, BodyPump, and CXWorX and has been teaching all three classes at Wilson’s since February 2013.

Eric enjoys getting to know his members, watching them get ‘addicted’ to the workout and change their bodies, just like he did. “I like to work out in a team environment. The people in my class push me just like I push them.” As a former TV sports reporter who now makes videos at Veterans United Home Loans, this media buff promotes his classes on social media and uses Facebook groups to communicate and create personal relationships. “I do my best to inform and entertain my class as their coach.”

Amy Eultgen

Amy Eultgen

Amy completed her 200 RYT in 2014 and realized it was just the beginning of her journey. Her interest in yoga was piqued after taking a one-credit PE course at community college. In 2011, she trained in YogaFit Level 1 and began teaching at the Mizzou Rec Center. She came to Wilson’s in the summer of 2013 after obtaining her undergraduate degree of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology at the University of Missouri.

Amy enjoys running—and has completed six half marathons—as well as swimming and weight lifting. But most of all, she enjoys teaching her classes. “I love the post-class yoga high. I learn so much about myself on and off of the mat that I wanted to be able to help guide others along the experience. You create a community when you teach, which keeps people coming back.” In the summer you can find her on the roof at the District, teaching with Mother Nature. And in the winter, she will be inside the hot studio teaching Gentle Flow.
