Lisa K / Darla T

Either of these instructors may be teaching this class:

Lisa Kent holds certifications in Les Mills BodyStep, BodyPump, BodyCombat, BodyFlow, BodyVive, BOSU and Practical Pilates. She has completed YogaFIT Levels 1, 2 and 3, and is also certified by the American Council on Exercise in personal training. She began her fitness journey after the birth of her second child, taking aerobics classes at a local college. For 20 years she could be found on the front row, changing her body, getting stronger, and loving the social aspect of working out; making lifelong friends in the process. She took the leap to become an instructor when she moved to Columbia with her family from Austin, Texas in 2006 starting with BodyStep. In 2007 she joined the team at Wilson’s and helped expand the group fitness program one format at a time, each an exciting new adventure. She currently teaches BodyPump, BodyCombat and BodyFlow and works as the Assistant Group Fitness Manager.

Lisa is a former vocalist and music therapist who brings her love of music and passion for fitness together to motivate her clients, inspiring them to reach their ultimate potential. “I love the electricity that happens when people aspire, together, to conquer their challenges. The moments when the whole room is working hard, when members reach heights they thought were unobtainable, those are the magic moments.” Lisa says the most rewarding thing about teaching is making a difference in people’s lives. “If people walk away from my class feeling empowered, feeling good about themselves, there is no better success.”

Darla Tharp is certified in Les Mills BodyAttack, BodyFlow, and BodyPump, and has been teaching at Wilson’s since January 2017. She developed a love of fitness, sports, and the outdoors at an early age.  In middle and high school, Darla participated in softball and basketball, ran as a sprinter on the track team, and took dance classes for fun.  In college, she continued to play softball and had a regular fitness routine that included running and resistance training.  After college her focus shifted to half marathons and triathlons. “I really enjoy mixing up my routine and trying different types of physical challenges which brought me to Wilson’s group fitness.  Attending classes in addition to running, biking, and swimming is a great way to increase strength, stamina, agility, and flexibility.”

Because four of Darla’s passions are physical fitness, music, teaching, and socializing, becoming a group fitness instructor was a natural fit. She loves helping others to reach their fitness goals and maintain a healthy balanced lifestyle. “I feel blessed to be able to teach classes to the beat of funky music while being immersed in the energy of the wonderful people around me.  It is a great way to challenge my own fitness capacity as well as those who attend class.”

When Darla isn’t in the gym, she’s either doing scientific research at the University of Missouri or is at one of her son’s many sporting events.

Angela Peterson

Angela started teaching at Wilson’s in 2018 after getting certified in Stages Indoor Cycling and Flight, and she currently teaches Flight.  Her fitness background is rooted in endurance sports. She played soccer for years growing up and these days she enjoys trail running, triathlons, and cycling. Being active outdoors is what she loves the most and where she spends most of her time. Yoga and pilates have been a recent addition to her fitness activities and have been awesome for her physical and mental health. BodyFlow is one of her favorite classes!

Angela’s biggest fitness accomplishments include her first trail half-marathon in October 2015,  Ironman Wisconsin in September 2017, a 206-mile gravel bike race called Dirty Kanza in June 2018, and a 150-mile gravel bike race called Gravel Worlds in August 2018. She is also an avid bike commuter and you may spot her on the MKT from time to time pulling her dog in his Burley tail wagon.

Angela is a former youth horseback riding teacher and now teaches kids to ride bikes.  She chose to become a fitness instructor to share her enthusiasm with others and help people on their fitness journeys. She loves cycling and what better way to share that than through teaching. “Everybody at times needs someone to encourage them or hold them accountable for a workout and being an instructor can do just that for anyone coming to my class or other classes.”  For her, the best part of teaching is honestly how much fun it is!  Teaching has introduced her to more people who enjoy cycling as well meeting new people too. Being an instructor for Stages Flight has also given her the space to create the training workouts and put her own music to it.  She encourages members, new or regular, to reach out to her with any questions about cycling or spinning – she’s always happy to help!

She’s taught multiple formats, including step, ‘slide’ and group racquetball and currently teaches RPM and BOSU along with Hot Barre in the hot studio.

Though Betty was athletic as a child, her real start with fitness began when she was 29. After having her first child she began jogging to lose weight. Then she started running races. Then marathons, including the infamous Boston Marathon. She  also played competitive women’s racquetball, biked the MS 150 and took aerobics classes. Betty chose to become an instructor when coaxed by an instructor to channel her passion for working out. “I love sharing the knowledge I have acquired along the way and watching people see that fitness is fun; it gives you energy and makes you feel great!” She wants her members to get excited about living a healthy lifestyle and be good examples for their families and friends, too.

What Betty loves most is motivating people to believe they have an inner athlete, that they can become fitter, and it is never too late! Since she was almost 30 when she began, she inspires her participants simply by walking the walk. “If I can inspire just one person to get healthier each time I lead a class, then I am fulfilled. I have done the job that I love so much.”

In high school, she successfully auditioned and was accepted into the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center.  Shortly after moving to New York City, she began professional dance training at Alvin Ailey American Dance Center where she studied ballet, West African, Modern, Horton, Dunham, dance choreography, and more. Today, Candace resides in Columbia, and is a licensed cosmetologist at Riversong Spa and Salon.  She is a guest instructor and choreographer at the Perlman-Stoy School of Ballet.  Candace is wife to husband, Eric, and mother to two precious children, Jamila and Xavier.

She is also a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Council on Strength and Fitness (NCSF) and has her USA Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach and has achieved her CrossFit Level 1 certification.

Always athletic, Kelie was active in sports when she was younger, but didn’t discover group fitness until after she had her second baby and needed to get 60 pounds of pregnancy off. She started attending BodyStep and was instantly hooked. “The endorphins and the adrenaline were real and so were the results!” Less than  year later, she went to her first training. That was in 2008 and she’s been teaching multiple classes every week since. Currently, Kelie teaches Fusion, BodyStep, and TRX/Kettle Circuit.

At first, becoming an instructor was about the challenge of doing something far outside of her comfort zone. But once she started, it became more about her members. “I realized that I could help them and lift them, even if it was just for one hour a day. It was clear to me then, that this was not just a hobby or a fun pastime for me, it was my passion.”

Kelie wants her participants to know that she has been where they have been.; she’s been overweight and out of shape, she’s been injured, overworked and overstressed. She knows the reasons that stop them from taking that first scary step into the group fitness studio. But she promises, “I will be there to welcome you, introduce you to a friend and above all else, give you a great workout!”

Nikki Wilson

Nikki has been with Wilson’s since 2012.  She is a Certified Personal Trainer and heads up the Kickboxing program at the MAC.  While Nikki shares the same last name as Wilson’s, she is not in the Wilson’s family… but the gym is like a home to her.  Not only does she teach many classes and train many clients (adult and youth), she is also the head coach for the MAC Shark swim team.

Nikki grew up immersed in sports and fitness.  No matter the age or ability, Nikki strives to help everyone become better versions of themselves.  Her clients/students are the most positive things in her life, along with her dogs and beloved KU basketball team, of course.  Not only does she motivate, instruct, and support her clients, she says her clients help her just as much.  They are a big part of her life and after a debilitating injury in 2014, they continue to show tremendous support.  “It’s the community that really sets the “job” apart.”

If you’ve ever trained with Nikki or been to one of her Kickboxing classes, you know she won’t let you get away with anything.  Tough love is her specialty, although she does have a soft spot for her two Shih Tzus, Princess Samoa and King Capias.

She also holds certifications in Oh Baby! She currently teaches BodyPump, RPM, Hot Barre, BodyAttack, Animal Flow, Kickboxing, and Pilates and takes personal training clients.

When she was pregnant with her first child, Meghan was 120 pounds heavier.  “I learned how quickly lifestyle and diet can get out of control.”  Meghan came to work (with her baby) in the Wilson’s playcenter in 2006.  Being in a supportive, healthy environment led to weight loss, fitness, and education.  In 2009 she became a personal trainer and was excited to help others.  She maintained a healthy diet and weight through her other three pregnancies, and her passion for exercise grew to encompass group fitness as well.

“I love motivating people to feel empowered and successful; to do something they didn’t think they could do, or be someone they didn’t think they could be.”  She also finds it uplifting to see the camaraderie that develops within a class, training session, and the gym community.

Kelsey Gibson is certified in YogaFit Level 1 and started teaching Fusion at Wilson’s in 2018.  She was always an active person (lot of gymnastics and cheerleading throughout childhood), then began working with a personal trainer after high school.  Her fitness addiction quickly grew!

Kelsey chose to become an instructor because fitness has made such a huge impact on her life and she wanted to help others have the same experience.  She thinks everyone has that “special instructor” that has influenced their life and she wants to be that person for someone.  She loves to see others thrive and reach their goals.

What Kelsey loves most about teaching is forming new relationships with her class members.  She finds it extremely rewarding that she gets to help them take 60 minutes out of their busy schedules to give back to themselves.  She is blessed to have a job where she gets to walk alongside others in their wellness journeys.  Kelsey’s other job is a massage therapist, so she thinks the two go together like Oreos and milk!

Anah Riley

Anah Riley

Anah became certified in Les Mills BodyCombat in 2018 and has been teaching it at Wilson’s since then.  She chose to become an instructor because group fitness changed her life.  Growing up struggling with her weight and health, she discovered group fitness classes (along with personal training and lifting) her senior year of high school.  She made the conscious decision to take her life back.  She loved the community of a class, the personal, cared-for feeling each instructor gave you.  “They made me feel like I could conquer anything, like I was valued, important, and had a purpose.  That would get me through class, and even more – life.”  What started out as something she felt like she had to do turned into something she looked forward to doing all day!

Anah wants members to feel like that when they come to her class; its a place where they can give everything they have to walk out feeling stronger emotionally, mentally, and physically.  “It’s about so much more than what happens in a one-hour class – it’s how you take your life back and care for yourself in mind, body, and spirit!”  What she loves best about teaching is getting to know members and seeing them get stronger, fitter, and overall happier.  She loves learning about their stories.  She wants to teach that PROGRESS is what matters, not perfection.  Everybody’s roads look different, but we’re all on them together!  Anah wants members to know that group fitness is for EVERYBODY.  There is a class (or two, or three!) out there for everyone.  Instructors care for you in and out of the gym.  “To be able to do life with you is a privilege that motivates both us and you!”

Spinning.  Fitness has played a major role in Chuck’s life; he has been a triathlete, road runner, cyclist, weightlifter, baseball player, and wrestler.  Chuck first started working at Wilson’s at the front desk and would take spinning classes on his days off, but as an employee, he would have to give up his bike to a member if the class filled.  Tired of getting booted, he decided to become the instructor!

Chuck loves to push his clients, to make them work harder than they thought they could, and to see the results.  Plus, he likes being in control!  He wants his members to know that they are capable of way more than they think.  If they train hard and learn to control their doubt and anxiety, they can exceed their goals.

Either one of these instructors may be teaching this class:

Vesta Hotchkiss is certified in Les Mills BodyPump, teaching at Wilson’s since May of 2014.  She participated in many sports growing up and has always loved being physically active.  After attending TigerX classes at Mizzou, she fell in love with group fitness.  Upon graduating, she joined Wilson’s and started attending many classes… but she was intimidated by BodyPump and did not try it right away.  Once she did, she was hooked, and it became her favorite class!  It still is, along with BodyCombat, BodyAttack, Yoga, and BodyFlow.

Vesta became a regular BodyPump participant and was always in the front row.  When her instructor, Lisa Kent, came up to her after class and said, “You know, if you know the choreography better than I do, then it is time to get certified!”  Vesta laughed her off at first, but the more she thought about it, the more she liked the idea!  She got certified right away.  She loves everything about group fitness; the music, the movements, the people.  She loves how it brings people together, creates relationships, and challenges people to push themselves.  She loves being their cheerleader and their coach.  “Fitness changes lives!”

Vesta teaches kindergarten at Mill Creek Elementary and has taught in Columbia for 9 years.  She has a wonderful husband, Phil, who loves coming to her Saturday classes and being in the front row!  They have a two year-old son, Auggie, who might be a BodyPump instructor some day!  She is a health food nut and enjoys talking about healthy eating.

Sarah Eaden is certified in Les Mills BodyCombat and BodyPump and has been an instructor at Wilson’s since 2017.  In 2014, she lost 30 pounds taking BodyCombat and BodyPump.  She earned her certification in BodyCombat in 2015 and never looked back!  She wanted to become an instructor to keep herself motivated to work out.  She was not an outgoing person before becoming an instructor and teaching allowed her to get out of her shell.  Being an instructor has truly changed her life.

Sarah likes to see her members push themselves to finish the workout.  The instructors challenging her is what hooked her on group fitness, and she hopes she can help members along their paths to wellness, too.  She loves to challenge her classes with more reps, heavier weights, etc., but is also a huge stickler for form; she recognizes when to pull back in a workout.  She hopes members will see her as a fun, challenging instructor who will encourage them no matter their fitness level!

Jen has been a group fitness instructor since 2012, but joined the Wilson’s team in 2018.  She has her Group Fitness certification through AFAA and is certified in Les Mills BodyCombat, which she currently teaches.  Jen started teaching classes in college; she always preferred group fitness to other workouts – its just more fun to her!  She has taught strength, cardio, cycling, yoga, and kickboxing over the years.  She taught Turbo Kick before she discovered BodyCombat, and has taught classes in St. Louis, Columbia, and at a fitness camp in Florida.

Jen wanted to become an instructor because she loves the atmosphere of group fitness and working out with others.  She feels like she learned an incredible amount about herself through teaching group fitness.  “I love how I am always being challenged as an instructor, whether it is connecting with others, the physical workout, or the art of coaching.”  The reciprocated enthusiasm between everyone in a class is beyond anything she has experienced.  The energy is empowering and she is very drawn to it.  Every class is more than just a workout;  it is an event, an experience.  The instructors who create that unique experience inspire and challenge her to bring that to her own members, and that is the beauty of group fitness – everyone growing stronger together, every class.

When she’s not teaching BodyCombat, you’ll find her taking BodyPump, RPM, Fusion, and other Wilson’s classes; baking; and enjoying a hot, sunny day!

She taught her first class at Club Woodrail in 1999 and has been teaching at Wilson’s since 2002. Kelly is certified in Les Mills BodyJam, Aerial Yoga. Pilates, and TRX, and currently teaches BodyJam, Aerial Barre, Studio Barre, Sweat & Stretch, Advanced Strength, and Cardio Lengthen & Strengthen.

Kelly enjoys bringing the fun of exercise to a group of individuals who are there for self-improvement. “Learning that we can sweat and smile at the same time makes the thought of going to the gym a treat instead of a chore.” She also feels teaching holds her accountable to maintain her own personal level of fitness and professionalism, and she strives in each of her classes to make a positive impact on someone’s day. While Kelly loves much about her job, her favorite thing is that teaching has given her the very best friends in her life and experiences she treasures.  Coming together with those who share a similar mindset defines her very life. “The relationships I’ve made are priceless.”

Amanda Ruyle

Amanda has been teaching Les Mills BodyStep at Wilson’s since becoming certified in 2016.  She also teaching Board Balance classes outside during the summer.  She use to hate working out and going to the gym until she was inspired by some wonderful Wilson’s instructors (Lisa K and Sara M).  Soon, as a participant, her love for fitness classes grew; she wanted to become a teacher so she could motivate others to love it (and working out in general) like those instructors did for her!

Amanda believes working out isn’t something we “have to do”, but something we can “love to do”!  Group fitness helped her feel better about herself… mind, body, and soul.  She is thankful for all of the Les Mills programs that make coming to the gym FUN!

Hannah Henze

Hannah is certified in YogaFit Level I and YogaFit Seniors. She currently teaches Aerial Yoga, Aerial 101, and Restorative Aerial Yoga, and subs for Intro to Aerial Fabrics Basics, Aerial Fabrics Skills, and yoga. She’s also training to teach Hot Yoga.

Active throughout school, Hannah danced, marched in the band, competed in gymnastics, track and field, and cross country. In college she discovered roller derby, pole fitness, and aerial arts. When she became an instructor at Wilson’s in June 2015, she wanted to share her love for aerial arts and yoga, and remains passionate about continuing her education. Personally, she is expanding her horizons by training in various circus arts including contortion, corde lisse, and flying trapeze. Hannah also has a combined Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, and health science as well as two different minors in nuclear engineering. In addition to performing aerial arts and competing in pole championships, she works full time for the University of Missouri.

Hannah loves seeing breakthroughs in her students when, after working through a move in aerial, their faces light up. She also loves bringing the joy of yoga to her participants with no competition or expectation. “Yoga isn’t about if we’re flexible or strong enough; it’s about coming back to your center, finding your ground.” Hannah wants people to know instructors are here to help them grow in their journey of self-discovery. “Don’t be afraid to push yourself and step out of your comfort zone. Don’t let fear keep you from exploring what you’re capable of.”

Either instructor may be teaching this class:

Amber Blumberg is a Les Mills BodyPump certified instructor and started teaching at Wilson’s in 2019.  She chose to become a fitness instructor because group fitness has had such a positive impact on her life, mostly because the instructors were so motivating and the environment so welcoming.  She loves connecting with people and loves fitness so teaching allows her to incorporate both of these things at the same time.  She currently teaches BodyPump and Balance Board.

About 6 years ago, Amber decided to make health and fitness a priority in her life after realizing that her weight and lifestyle were holding her back.  She had never prioritized fitness as an adult and wanted to make a change.  She lost almost 100 pounds, mainly because of her involvement in group fitness at Wilson’s!  She started attending lots of different classes and fell in love with yoga and BodyJam.  In the last year, she started to focus more on strength with classes like BodyPump and GRIT.

Amber loves teaching because she is able to educate people on their health and fitness.  She also loves the opportunity to meet new people.  “Watching people grow in their fitness journey is such a reward!”

She loves attending her husband, Eric’s, GRIT classes, too.  “He’s one of my fitness heroes!”  Amber is a middle school band director by day.  She has two sons, Carter and Lyndon, and step-daughter, Trina.

Eric Blumberg started teaching at Wilson’s in 2013, when he became certified in Les Mills GRIT.  An ACE-Certified Personal Trainer, he also taught Les Mills CxWorX and BodyPump for a time, but then decided to focus solely on his first love… GRIT, which he dubs “the toughest workout in the gym”.  Eric likes to be challenged to push his personal limits and so he brings that same feeling to his classes.  He challenges his GRIT family to push themselves past what they think they can do to reach their next level of fitness.  Eric also teaches Balance Board classes with wife, Amber.

Eric doesn’t call what he does ‘teaching’ class… instead, he’s ‘coaching’ class.  He’s encouraging and motivating his class to reach new heights.  When class is done, he enjoys getting to know his participants better so it feels like a family.  People in his class ask where someone is when a regular doesn’t make it.  Eric also runs a GRIT Facebook page called Wilson’s GRIT Athletes, where he posts articles about the benefits of HIIT (high intensity interval training) and why it’s great for you.  In the summer, he holds GRIT at the Beach Club; a special class outside where participants earn a free day for themselves and a friend at the Beach Club.
